In
the papers that defined relational theory, tables were called relations,
rows were called tuples, and columns were called attributes.
These terms have an important mathematical basis, but are now rarely used
outside of academia. The term Relational database comes from this original
name for tables and has nothing to do with the dBASE/dB2K term of the same
name.
